Course Content
This course will present the clinical management of patients in the ICU and in the perioperative period. Moreover, specific topics will be selected by students in relation to their personal attitudes, interests and singular training paths.

Learning Objectives
To provide to the future clinical psychologist the essential knowledge
about epidemiology and risk factors, pathogenesis, diagnostic and
therapeutic pathways of neoplastic diseases.
This course offers a global view on anesthesiology, intensive care medicine and pain therapy provided to surgical patients, critical ill or end-of-life patients. Beyond the most important topics on perioperative, critical care and palliative medicine, specific topic may be suggested by each student in relation to personal attitudes, interests and training path.

Teaching Methods
Frontal lectures
This course includes frontal lessons in which all topics will be illustrated, divided in three large thematic groups: perioperative medicine, intensive care medicine and pain therapy. During the lessons, methodological bases for individual or group scientific research will be provided in the specific field selected by each student.
Further information
Even if attendance at lessons is not mandatory, we recommended to enroll in the course as a regularly attending student, considering the absence of reference books and the difficulty of treated topics.
Type of Assessment
Written examination
A mandatory written test will be undergone at the end of the course to evaluate basic knowledge acquired. Every student will electronically (via moodle platform)present an essay about a specific topic, selected independently (not more than 3 pages, written in Italian or English, at least 20 bibliographic sources).

Introduction and general concepts of oncology, approach to the cancer
patient
Epidemiology and risk factors of the most common neoplastic diseases
Principles of prevention, diagnosis and staging of neoplastic diseases
Principles of medical therapy and integrated treatments of cancer
Evaluation of response to cancer treatments
Toxicity of medical therapy
Cancer cachexia
The terminal cancer patient and palliative care
Perioperative medicine:
1. Preoperative evaluation: process, objectives and professional roles involved (multidisciplinary taking and social network); the charge of the patient, preoperative management, anesthetist joint choice and informed consent; preoperative planning. Anesthesia and preoperative location.
2. Anesthesia: definition, classification and process; mention to central nervous system anatomy, physiology and pharmacological strategy for anesthesia induction and maintenance; patient monitoring during general/loco-regional anesthesia/sedation; awareness and psychological consequences. Setting and healthcare professionals.
3. Postoperative monitoring: setting and process; postoperative pain management and psychological/emotive consequences; surgical patient rehabilitation and continuity postoperative local care.
Intensive care unit:
1. Patient admission: indications and major diseases leading intensive care unit admission.
2. Critical patient management: mention to pharmacological e no-pharmacological treatment; mention to principal medical (invasive or not-invasive) devices used and functional and long term consequences.
3. Intensive care communication: analysis of the issues and relationships between healthcare operators and the patient.
4. End of life management in intensive care unit.
5. Discharge from the intensive care unit and integration with territorial healthcare network.
Pain Therapy:
1. Pain conduction: mention to pain conduction anatomy and physiology and possible therapeutic mechanism.
2. Pharmacological and not-pharmacological chronical pain treatment.
3. Palliative treatment: indications and management; professional operators involved; setting and available possible treatment strategies.
