Section A of the Professional Register

The law governing the regulation of the profession of Psychologist (Law No. 56 of 18/02/1989 and subsequent amendments) stipulates that, in order to practice the profession, a graduate in Psychology must have obtained professional qualification and be registered with the Professional Register of Psychologists.

For graduates of the old Master's Degree program, class LM-51 (non-qualifying), with the entry into force of the Ministerial Decrees of 2022, the completion of a Practical Evaluation Internship (PEI) of 750 hours is required for admission to the Practical Evaluation Exam (PEE) for professional qualification.

For the School of Psychology, the PEI commenced with the implementation of the Regulation on 16/01/2023.

However, those who began their internship on 15/09/2022, during the transitional period from the previous post-graduate regulations to the new PEI regulations, completed the PEI in full. Therefore, for the purpose of qualifying for the profession of Psychologist, they must register for the Practical Evaluation Exam (PEE), in accordance with the Interministerial Decree 567 of 20/06/2022.

Graduates from previous academic programs (specialist degree, class 58/S or five-year degree obtained according to the regulations prior to Ministerial Decree 509/99), in order to be admitted to the State Examination for professional qualification, must complete one year of post-graduate internship, divided into two continuous and uninterrupted semesters in two different areas. The aim is to acquire the competencies, methodologies, and operational tools related to the professional practice of a psychologist.

"The profession of psychologist includes the use of cognitive and intervention tools for prevention, diagnosis, habilitation-rehabilitation activities, and support in the psychological field aimed at individuals, groups, social organizations, and communities. It also includes research, experimentation, and teaching activities within this field."

In accordance with the relevant regulations governing professional activities, the professional practice undertaken during the psychologist’s internship must be clearly distinguished from that of the psychotherapist, a role for which a separate and subsequent training pathway is foreseen.

Those registered in Section A are entitled to the professional title of Psychologist.
